“You would need to have a heart of stone or an ear of tin to not be impressed by his sound”, wrote Tony Gieske twenty years ago describing the music of James Carter and comparing his music making to Jimi Hendrix. Carter’s music playing is at times surprisingly soft and gentle and afterwards furious and sharp, but it is always attractive regardless. Carter’s style can be described as fiery, funky, rambunctious, charismatic and witty.
